Vera Hartwig
Vera Hartwig, formerly of Johnson Creek, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2016 at Alden Estates of Jefferson, where she had resided for the past two years. Vera was born on November 14, 1920, in the Town of Milford to William and Emma (Freitag) Schmidt. She attended a one room school in the Town of Milford through 8th grade.
On Valentine’s Day 1942, Vera was united in marriage with James Hartwig at St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church of Milford, where Vera had been baptized and confirmed. Vera and Jim were blessed with six children. After her children were raised, Vera was employed for many years as a cook by the Johnson Creek School District. Vera loved to cook and bake. Her family was especially fond of her hot dishes and pies. She enjoyed working in her garden and there wasn’t a flower she couldn’t coax back to life. Vera liked playing euchre and bingo and the socializing that went along with that.
Vera is survived by her husband of almost 74 years, Jim, of Jefferson. She is further survived by her six children, Wayne (Jean) Hartwig of Jefferson; Barbara Saenz of Coral Gables, Florida; Joann Fetherston of St. Petersburg, Florida; Janet (Randy) Culler of Jefferson; Mary (John) Watts of St Augustine, Florida and David (Elaine) Hartwig of Santee, California. Vera is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great–great-grandchild.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters and six brothers. She was the last surviving member of her family.
Vera was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Johnson Creek, where services will be held on Tuesday, January 19, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Matthew Smith-Laubenstein officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Johnson Creek. Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Rainbow Hospice Care or to a charity of one’s choice. Hafemeister Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Watertown is serving the family. The family would like to sincerely thank all of the staff at Alden Estates for the excellent care given to Vera over the last two years and to Rainbow Hospice for making her last days as comfortable as possible.
