Roger A. Koeppel
Roger A. Koeppel, age 76, of Watertown, passed away at his home after a brief illness on Thursday evening, January 31, 2013.
Roger was born on July 7, 1936 in Jefferson, the son of Herman and Esther (Zander) Koeppel. He attended St. Peter's Lutheran School in Helenville and was a 1954 graduate of Jefferson Senior High School. Roger had been employed at Stoppenbachs Sausage Co. in Jefferson and Klements Sausage Co. in Milwaukee. The past 13 years he was employed part time at Berres Bros Coffee Roasters in Watertown. Roger also served in the Wisconsin National Guard during the Berlin Crisis. On April 18, 1959, he married Shirley Wolter at Bethany Lutheran Church in Hustisford. Roger was a long time member at St. John's Lutheran Church in Jefferson regularly attending services and having served on the Church Council, Elders, and Stewardship Board. He valued and held to his Christian faith throughout his life.
Roger loved the outdoors and sunshine. Working on a neighbor's farm in his youth gave him a never ending love for tractors and farm machinery. He loved going to tractor pulls and meeting the owners. Camping with the grandchildren was another love. He always took pride in his cars, keeping them cleaned and shined. Roger and his wife, Shirley, enjoyed traveling around Wisconsin and the country with their fifth wheel travel trailer. Above all, he loved polka music and was an avid listener to the polka radio stations. Roger really enjoyed the camaraderie of all the musicians in the bands from our area as well as musicians from surrounding states.
Roger is survived by his wife, Shirley of Watertown; two children, his son, Rendy (Maria) Koeppel of Reseda, California, and daughter, Lori (Ron) Draeger of Waterloo; seven grandchildren, Marcus Koeppel, Adrienne Koeppel, and Tiffany Koeppel, Ryan Draeger, Jennifer Draeger, Andrew Draeger, and Michelle Draeger; one step-grandchild, Micah Robinson; one sister, Joanne (Richard) Monogue of Milton, one brother, Larry (Diane) of Port Orange, Florida; one sister-in-law, Linda Koeppel of Helenville; his mother-in-law, Luella Wolter of Hustisford; and many relatives and friends.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Glenn; his brother-in-law, Ronald Streich; his niece, Susan Ladish; twin grandchildren, Kyle and Kevin Draeger; and his father-in-law, Arthur Wolter.
A burial service will be held at Christberg Cemetery east of Jefferson at 9:30 AM on Wednesday.
