Pieter M. Van Beem
Pieter M. Van Beem, 87, of Watertown, passed away on Friday, February 8, 2019 at Rainbow Hospice Inpatient Center in Johnson Creek, after a brief but courageous battle with Leukemia.
Pieter Melius Van Been was born on August 29, 1931 in Haarlemmermeer, Netherlands, the son of Cornelius and Johanna (Visser) Van Beem. He immigrated to the United States in 1961, where he first moved to Waterloo, Wisconsin and then later settled in Watertown, Wisconsin. On October 29, 1966, he was united in marriage to Linda Sherman at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church in Watertown. Pieter worked at Van Holtenís Pickles, then moved on to work as a Pressman/Supervisor at Perry Printing, where he was employed for 30 years.
Pieterís pragmatic approach to life, witty sense of humor, and thick Dutch accent will be remembered by those who knew and loved him. He was the no-nonsense type; reasonable, and realistic. One never had to guess what Pieter was thinking, as he would tell you, unprompted. While always proud of his Dutch lineage, he was dedicated to working hard to build a home for himself in America and provide a comfortable and happy life for his family. He enjoyed working in the yard, tackling home improvement projects, a cold beer on a hot day, and watching the dozens of birds that filled his feeders daily. He and his wife, Linda, were loyal supporters of the Watertown Humane Society, Rainbow Hospice, and the Wildlife in Need Center
Pieter is survived by his two children, Mark (Sandra) Van Beem and Kristen Van Beem; two grandchildren, Vicki Van Beem and Jeffery Van Beem; great-grandchildren, Preslee, Brentley and Shelby Van Beem all of Watertown; sister, Dien Poot-Van Beem of Abbekerk, Netherlands, as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Linda (Sherman) Van Beem, and brother, Cornelius Van Beem.
As per his wishes no service will be held. Memorials in Pieter's memory may be sent to the Watertown Humane Society or Rainbow Hospice. Hafemeister Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Watertown is serving the family. Online condolences may be made at www.hafemeisterfh.com.
