LaVern “Bud” G. Nickels, 88, of Waterotwn, passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2019 at Marquardt Village on hospice in Watertown.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Watertown with Rev. Karl Walther officiating. Family and friends may gather at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial with military honors will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Watertown. Memorials, if desired, may be directed to St. Mark’s Church, St. Mark’s School, or Marquardt Hospice. Hafemeister Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Watertown is serving the family. LaVern George Nickels was born on March 25, 1930 to George and Elsie (nee Eggert) Nickels in Watertown. Bud was a 1948 graduate of Watertown High School. He served faithfully in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from June 19, 1951 until April 21, 1953. On September 18, 1954, he married the former Ardis Zastrow at St. Bernard’s Parsonage in Watertown. Bud previously was employed at Brandt Automatic Cashiers for 35 years as well as Menasha Corp. and Bee Industries.
Bud volunteered his time with Meals on Wheels and Marquardt Health Center. He was a member of St. Mark’s Church, and was a member of the board of elders at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Bud was also a member of American Legion Post 189, and a Watertown Country Club member for 28 years. He was an avid golfer, sinking two hole-in-one shots. In addition, he once bowled a 300- game, and enjoyed hunting and the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ardis Nickels of Watertown; children, Steven (Sarah) Nickels of Watertown, John (Terry) Nickels of Watertown; six grandchildren, Bryan Nickels, Michael Nickels, Katie (Josh) Kerwin, Nicole (Charles) Loppnow, Jessica Nickels, Jared Nickels; one great-grandchild, Griffin Loppnow; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Bud was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Lorraine Tourbier.
