A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Watertown at noon on Saturday, with Monsignor Daniel Ganshert, Celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the Mass. If desired, memorials may be sent to the St. Bernard’s Education Trust Fund.
Joyce Marie Wendorff was born in rural Washington County on July 8, 1926, daughter of Reinhold and Clara (Otto) Wendorff. She graduated from Watertown High School in 1944 as the Valedictorian. In 1948, Joyce graduated from UW Madison with BS degree in education and was awarded the Herforth Award for Outstanding Senior Woman from UW Madison. She obtained a Masters Degree from UW Whitewater in Special Education.
Joyce taught science in West Bend High School from 1949 to 1950. Later she taught in the Dodgeland district, twelve years at St. Bernard’s Grade School and several years at MATC adult education.
Joyce married John R. Byrne in West Bend on June 10, 1950. They lived in the Chicago area for twelve years before returning to Watertown.
She was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and the Watertown Senior Center. She was also a former member of AAUW, the Saturday Club, the Catholic Women’s Club and the Watertown Hospital Auxiliary. Joyce volunteered at the Octagon House, the Marquardt Coffee Shop and at St. Vincent DePaul, all in Watertown.
She enjoyed her grandchildren, teaching and playing bridge.
Survivors include her husband, John Byrne, of Watertown; her children, Robert (Donna) Byrne of New Auburn, Janet (Michael) Walsh of South Daytona, FL; Thomas (Lina) Byrne of Port Washington; Elizabeth (Wayne) Madsen of Kokomo, IN; Margaret (Glenn) Willman of Watertown and Nancy Miller of River Falls; twelve grandchildren, Rebecca Miller, Julia Walsh, Nicholas Byrne, Patrick Byrne, Jacqueline Hamlin, Daniel Madsen, Jeffrey Pauli, Emily Preisler, Lisa Madsen, Abigail Byrne, Kathleen Miller and Evan Miller; four great grandchildren, Vance Denk, Sophia Miller, Isla Byrne and Henry Miller; a sister, Emelyn Shier of Bayside; a brother, Rolland (Arvilla) Wendorff of Wausau, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Joyce was predeceased by her parents, and her sisters, Hazel Krause, Arlene Hady, Ruth Schammel, Alice Thoma and Bernice Kurth.
