Alice May Rose Hilse was born on March 10, 1935 to Martin and Rose (Ryf) Hilse in Juneau. She attended Immanuel Lutheran School in Lebanon and was confirmed at the church. She married Clarence L. Zietlow on June 27, 1959 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lebanon.
Alice was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Watertown. She was a devoted homemaker and she loved to garden and volunteer her time during her children’s earlier school years. As her children got older, she became employed at Shorehaven Lutheran Homes in Oconomowoc and worked there for 16 years. She made many friends that she enjoyed getting together with after her retirement. Alice loved spending time with and caring for her grandchildren. She went to their school events, helped them with their memory work and saw the youngest one’s off to school each morning. In her free time, she liked to go to the Senior Center to play bingo, go on occasional casino bus trips, meet friends for breakfast and meet monthly with the Wethonkitha Ladies group. Before her husband passed away, they traveled visiting friends and relatives and took various trips. They dreamed of going to Alaska together but were unable due to Clarence’s health. Alice eventually made the trip after Clarence’s passing.
Alice is survived by her children: David Zietlow, Ruth (Robert) Martin, Mark (Darcy) Zietlow and Rachel (Jay) Smith all of Watertown; seven grandchildren: Joshua (Madison Olson) Zietlow, Zachary Martin, Brooke (Justin Laird) Martin, Kaitlyn (Timothy Mallow) Smith, Jacob (Jessie Knopp) Smith, Jackson Zietlow and Jonathan Zietlow; two great-grandchildren: Cole and Levi Zietlow, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Clarence on February 17, 2004.
She was a very special wife, mother and grandmother who will be truly missed.
The family would like to thank the staff of Highland House and Rainbow Hospice for the wonderful care they provided to Alice and her family during her last days.
