He was born September 15, 1927 in Milwaukee, the son of Louis Frederick and Irene Julia (Schmitz) Schoofs. John graduated from Sacred Heart School in 1941 and Bay View High School in 1945. John enlisted in the U. S. Navy and was called one month prior to graduating.
After being discharged from the Navy in June 1946 he attended Marquette University for one year prior to enrolling in a funeral service internship. John subsequently graduated from Wisconsin Institute of Mortuary Science in 1950. He passed the State Board of Wisconsin examinations for licenses in embalming and funeral directing, a career he pursued until October 1964 when he became a casket company representative calling on funeral directors in southern Wisconsin.
John was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a charter member of the Ave Maria Assembly Knights of Columbus and a member of American Legion continuous since 1946.
On August 25, 1951 John married Maureen Marie McCarthy. He is survived by his wife; five children: Jean (James) Elvekrog, Robert (Mary) Schoofs, Fr. Phillip John Schoofs, Ann (Daniel) Hundt, Catherine (William) Bruhn; and eight grandchildren: Anne Marie (Timothy) Jarmuz, Margaret Elvekrog, John Schoofs, Sarah Schoofs, Karl Hundt, Matthew Hundt, Ellen Bruhn, Gretchen Bruhn; and two great grandchildren: Clare and Bridget Jarmuz; two brothers: Richard and Rev. Father Robert Schoofs, OSB; and sister, Mary Joan Prieve; and brother-in-law Timothy (Chong) McCarthy.
John was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Mary; sister-in-law, Therese Schoofs; and brother-in-law, E. Arthur Prieve.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 25, 2016 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 602 College St., Lake Mills, by the Rev. Phillip J. Schoofs. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until the time of Mass on Monday. Private graveside services at St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Cemetery, Johnson Creek. John reserved time for dedicated volunteer service to Meals on Wheels, St. Coletta’s Greenhouse, St. Vincent de Paul Society, Knights of Columbus, and his parish. In lieu of flowers or memorials, it would be John’s wish for you to find a way to share your time to touch the lives of others.
