James “Jim” A. Abplanalp, 73, of Watertown, passed away on Thursday, May 3, 2018 at Marquardt Health Center in Watertown.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church in Watertown with Rev. Daniel J. Fahls of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Oconomowoc officiating. Family and friends may gather at Hafemeister Funeral Home on Wednesday from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorials, if desired, would be appreciated to Christ United Methodist Church in Watertown. Hafemeister Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Watertown is serving the family. James Andrew Abplanalp was born on July 24, 1944 in Madison, the son of Adolf and Emma (nee Fink) Abplanalp. Jim grew up on the family farm. He was a 1962 graduate of Arena High School and a 1963 graduate of Davenport Barber School in Iowa. Jim had been employed at Don Cowen’s Barber Shop before taking it over as Jim’s Downtown Style and Trim where he gave the “best flat-top around”. He was at that location for over 46 years. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Watertown and the Izaak Walton League. He was a past member of the Watertown Country Club. Jim loved telling stories and jokes. He had many pastimes that he enjoyed: hunting, fishing, golfing, gardening, cooking, camping and spending time at his cabin in Soldier’s Grove. He loved traveling out west to Montana. Jim enjoyed Friday Fish Frys, Germanfest and polka dancing.
Jim is survived by companion of many years, Joyce Murtaugh; children, Karla (Chris Evenson) Abplanalp and Ryan Abplanalp; grandchildren, Aron (Janene) Vesper, Joleen Erb-Abplanalp and Emma Evenson; Joyce’s daughters, Heather (Thomas Smith) Murtaugh and Jill (Andrew Dunlap) Murtaugh; brother, LeRoy (Jeanette) Abplanalp; nephews, Todd Abplanalp and Troy Alplanalp; niece, Tami DiPiazza as well as one great-niece, one great-nephew, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
