Wesley “Wes” B. Altwies, 89, of Watertown, passed away on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at Park Terrace in Watertown.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Peter Wells officiating. Burial with military graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post #189 will take place at Oak Hill Cemetery in Watertown. Friends may call at the church on from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorials may be designated to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Lakeside Lutheran High School, St. Luke’s Medical Center for Heart Research or the charity of one’s choice. Wesley Altwies was born on April 11, 1929 in the town of Farmington, son of H.C. (Claude) and Lillian (nee Gruennert) Altwies. On July 12, 1975 he married Gladys Paerschka at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Watertown.
He was a former employee of the Oconomowoc Canning Company, Union Upholstery in Jefferson and retired May 1, 1991 after 39 years of service at Dresser Industries – Waukesha Engine, Division of Waukesha. He also worked part-time at Kennedy Chevrolet Buick Geo, Inc.
Wes was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church where he served on council, also as an elder and usher. He was also a member of Lakeside Men’s Club, the Wethonkitha Club, Watertown Country Club, AARP 3056, Watertown Senior Center, Wisconsin Lutheran Seniors and St. Luke’s Philanthropists Club.
He was an army veteran of the Korean War. He was a Post Commander of the Clarence McGuire Post 7852, 1961-1962, 91-92, 97-98. He also was a past County Council Commander of the Jefferson County Council, Second District Commander of the VFW, Commander of Eitoc Pup Tenet #24 M.O.C. also District #2. He was named All State Dodge County Council Commander for 1999 and All American V.F.W. District Commander 1971.
He was a life member of the following organizations: Veteran of Foreign Wars, Watertown Post 7852, Military of the Cooties, Pup Tent #24, Past Commanders V.F.W. Club, The Past Commander Club of Cooties, All America Past Commander of the V.F.W, Amvets, Christie Brown Memorial Scholarship of the V.F.W. National Home in Easton Rapids, Michigan, Watertown American Legion Post #189 and the firing squad and 40et 8 Organization. He was the Commander of the V.F.W. Firing Squad of Watertown 7852 as well as Commander of the City Vets Firing Squad.
He was in charge of the Veteran’s graves registration for the Watertown area. He also distributed flag holders to be placed on the grave of deceased veterans. For many years, he had been responsible for putting flags on the graves of veterans in conjunction with the American Legion.
Survivors include a sister, Audrey Hale of Watertown, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Gladys, seven brothers and three sisters.
