William Edward Hertel was born on October 5, 1924, the son of Mathias and Catherine (Englehart) Hertel, in Watertown. He attended St. Henry Catholic School as boy and was a lifetime member of St. Henry’s Catholic Church. Bill received a Certificate of Welding from Watertown High School as well as a Certificate of Agriculture from Johnson Creek High School. On October 23, 1954, he married Lorraine Petit in Rockford, IL. Lorraine preceded him in death on January 3, 2009.
Bill farmed his entire life in the Town of Watertown. He served on the Jefferson County Board, was a member of Watertown Turners, and worked part-time for the Watertown Township. He enjoyed spending time woodworking and gardening.
He is survived by sons; Mark (Jane) Hertel of Fort Atkinson, WI; Paul (Carol) Hertel of Belleville, IL; grandchildren, Ashley and Sara Hertel of Belleville, IL; a sister Elizabeth Reamer of Watertown, WI. He is further survived by Godchildren, David Hertel of Watertown, WI; Vincent Baurichter of Shreveport, LA; Joan Lapenckas of Marrero, LA as well as nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his loving wife Lorraine; children Mary and Dennis in infancy; a brother Matt Hertel; and a sister Catherine Baurichter.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Watertown with Rev. Father Scott Jablonski officiating. Relatives and friends may gather at church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the charity of one’s choice are appreciated.
