Donald L. Cowen, age 83, of Watertown passed away on Friday evening, June 1, 2012, at Golden Living Center in Watertown.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, June 7, 2012 at 7 p.m. at the Christ United Methodist Church in Watertown with the Reverend Ronald Kral officiating. Military Rites will follow performed by the Watertown American Legion Post #189. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Thursday from 4 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorials, if desired, may be directed to Christ United Methodist Church or to Rainbow Hospice.

Donald Lee Cowen was born on July 31, 1928 in Watertown, the son of Frank and Elsie (Gruel) Cowen. He attended Watertown High School and served his country as a member of the United States Navy. On December 26, 1948 Don married the former Gloria Gwendolyn Schroeder at the Methodist Church in Waterloo. He had been employed at Sherman Products in Watertown as a machinist. Don was a graduate of the Green Bay Barber College in Green Bay. He was employed as a barber in Beaver Dam. Don was then employed at Saeger’s Barber Shop in Watertown that later became Poole’s Barber Shop. After a few years, Don purchased the business from Leith Poole. Don changed the name to the Downtown Barber Shop which he owned and operated for over twenty-five years. He was then employed in the maintenance department at Brandt Automatic Cashier and Bethesda Lutheran Home, both in Watertown, until his retirement.
Don was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, the Isaac Walton League and the American Legion Post #189, all of Watertown. He was an Honorary Member of the Watertown Turners Association and had played baseball for the Turner’s and Weber Beers. Don was a true outdoorsman and he loved hunting and fishing.
Don is survived by his wife, Gloria of Watertown; a son-in-law, Geoffrey Schrab of Reeseville; a brother, Gene M. (Patricia) Cowen of Watertown, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Victoria M. Schrab on November 21, 2009; brothers, James and Kenneth Cowen; a sister, Audrey Zehren and a nephew, Paul Zehren.
