Melvin Floyd Probst was born on May 29, 1932, son of Oscar and Margaret (Sauer) Probst. He was baptized on June 15, 1932 and confirmed on March 25, 1945 at St. Peterís Lutheran Church in Helenville. After graduating from Jefferson High School, Bud attended the University of Wisconsin Farm Short Course, after which he took over the family farm. On May 21, 1955, he married the former Betty Tunak at St. Paulís Lutheran Church in Oconomowoc. He continued farming along with a long career in insurance. His insurance career included managing Helenville Mutual Insurance, Franklin Mutual Insurance in Plymouth, WI, and Rockford Mutual as vice president of underwriting. Budís love of music led him to be part of many municipal, marching and dance bands as a trumpet and trombone player for many years.
After retirement Bud and Betty moved back to Helenville, where Bud could help with work on the family farm, which he loved. He kept active by continuing his love of hunting with several trips to South Dakota, playing numerous rounds of golf with family and friends, and making several trips to Arizona. He was an active member of St. Peterís Lutheran Church and volunteered his time with church activities, particularly maintenance of the church cemetery. He enjoyed many family gatherings over the years, even when the house was overflowing!
Bud is survived by his wife Betty of 59 years; children, Tim (Susan) Probst, Tom (Joy) Probst, Dave (Christi) Probst, Steve (Mary) Probst and Kaye (Rob) Reichert; grandchildren, Jacob (Kirsten) Probst, Micah (friend Stephanie) Probst, Malinda (Chris) Probst, Dillon (Lindsey) Probst, Jaclyn Probst, Alison Probst, Rachel Probst, Jonathon Probst, Kyle Reichert and step-grandson Joshua Garrett; great-grandchildren, Kayden Probst, Emberlee Probst, and Levi Probst.
He is further survived by a sister, Beverly (Probst) Melcher; brothers, Eugene (Jean) Probst, Mark (Cathy) Probst; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Donna and Ralph Andrus, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; in-laws Henry and Leona Tunak; infant daughter, Janet Probst; grandson, Benjamin Probst in infancy; a sister, Marion Probst, brothers-in-law, Earl Roth and Frank Melcher, and nephew Michael Roth.
