Helen M. Bickel, 92, of Watertown, formerly of Reeseville, passed away on Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at Heritage Homes in Watertown.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 15, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Hafemeister Funeral Home with Rev. Don Steinberg officiating. Friends and family may gather at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Reeseville. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Immanuel Lutheran Church in Reeseville and American Cancer Society are appreciated.
Helen Marie Lacaeyse was born on April 24, 1923 in the Town of Alba, the daughter of Edmond and Emily (nee Rogiers) Lacaeyse. She graduated from Reeseville High School. On April 4, 1941 she was married by Rev. Martin Ruesset to Lawrence Bickel at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Dubuque, IA. Lawrence preceded her in death on November 25, 2008. While Lawrence served over seas, she worked at the Defense Plant in Detroit for a year. After a short time in Detroit, she and Ruth returned to Reeseville where they resided with Margaret and her family. She was employed by the Reeseville Canning Factory as well as the Watertown School District Food Service.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Reeseville where she served as the Ladies Aid of Immanuel for many years. She loved to quilt and many of her relatives and friends received that precious gift. She was also an avid cookie baker. Everyone’s favorite was her molasses fruit cookies.
Helen is survived by a daughter, Ruth Ann (Dennis) McConnell of Gainesville, FL; five grandchildren, Michael (Susan) McConnell, Sharon (Bryan) McCartney, Elizabeth (Harry) Morse, Karl (Patti Quinn) Bickel and Samantha (Marcus) Eaves; a daughter-in-law, Judy Bickel of Watertown; five great grandchildren; a sister, Gabriel Kohl of Randolph as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edmond and Emily; her husband, Lawrence; son, Robert Bickel; twin sister, Margaret Gernezke, as well as brother, Cyril Lacaeyse.
