Clyde George Gerber was born on February 27, 1926 in Cottage Grove, the son of Simon and Rosa (nee Zufluh) Gerber. He was the youngest of 16 children. Clyde grew up on a farm near Cottage Grove. He completed his GED/HSED and attended one year of college at University of Wisconsin, Madison. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and served in the South Pacific as a Radio Tech on the U.S.S. Gazelle. Seven of Clyde’s brothers were in service at the same time. Following his military service, he worked for Brinks Security in Minneapolis. On October 16, 1955, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Gurtner at the Zwingli Lutheran Church in Monticello. He was employed as a telegrapher-agent for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. Clyde worked at several stations before settling at Jefferson Junction, where he retired after 30 years of service. Clyde was a member of Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church in Watertown. He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, wood carving, and camping. He liked to explore Wisconsin state parks, cities and lakes. He chose different places for each camping trip, keeping the destinations secret, surprising Liz upon arrival and adding excitement to the trip.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth “Liz” Gerber of Watertown; two children, Sharon (Greg) Austin of Janesville and Wayne (Lori) Gerber of Watertown; three grandchildren, Molly Rose of Madison; Ryan Boeder of Madison; Cassandra Gerber of St. Paul, MN and one step-grandson, Aaron Austin of Janesville; eight great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Clyde was the last living member of his immediate family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; ten brothers: John, Jake, Bill, Fritz, Paul, Rudy, Max, Ben, Walter and Ernie Gerber as well as five sisters: Lily Stuedli, Rose Tietz, Flora Gerber, Lena Newman and Fern Delvis.
