Rev. Donald W. Meier, age 91, of Watertown, was called to his heavenly home on Monday, May 29, 2017 at Dycora Transitional Health in Watertown.

Donald Walter Meier was born on July 24, 1925 in Aberdeen, South Dakota, the son of Pastor Walter T. and Esther E (nee Detert) Meier. After graduating from DMLC high school he served in the United States Navy as a Combat Aircrewman during World War II. He was united in marriage to Lois M Harmon on August 3, 1947 at First Shellrock Lutheran Church in Northwood, Iowa. He is a graduate of Bethany Lutheran College and Concordia Seminary. He was ordained into the ministry in 1952.

Rev. Meier served at Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Girard, IL; Our Savior’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Wausau, the Development Director at Bethesda Lutheran Home in Watertown for 3 years, First Ev. Lutheran in Lake Geneva; Immanuel Ev. Lutheran, St. Paul, MN, Mt. Olive Ev. Lutheran Church in St. Paul, MN and also as a WELS Planned Giving Counseler for Lift High the Cross. After retirement in Florida, he served a variety of WELS churches as vacancy Pastor and was instrumental in starting Open Bible Lutheran Church in The Villages. Donald was an avid fisherman and hunter. He also enjoyed stamp and coin collecting.

Donald is survived by his wife Lois of Watertown; children, Barb (Rev. Wayne) Mueller of Oconomowoc; Edward (Jarmilla) Meier of Lodi; John Meier of Alameda, CA; Patricia (Rick) Engstrom of Rochester, MN; David Meier of Watertown; Mari (Dave) Lepke of New London and Joel (Fran) Meier of St. Paul, MN; 25 grandchildren and 53 great grandchildren; his sister Muriel Koval of Ely, MN; sister-in-law Margaret Meier of St. Paul, MN; nieces and nephews; close friend Burly Brellenthin of Lake Geneva and many other dear friends. He was preceeded in death by his parents, brother, Rev. Norbert “Bud” Meier and great granddaughter, Sabrina Monday.

A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, July 3, 2017 at 11:00 am at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Watertown with Rev. Anthony Schultz and Rev. Mark Gartner officiating. Military honors will be conducted following the service. Family and friends may gather at the church from 10:00 am until the time of service. Memorials, if desired, may be directed to Lakeside Lutheran High School in Lake Mills or St. Croix Lutheran High School in West St. Paul, Minnesota.
