Francisca "Fran" C. Verhoeven, 78, Watertown, passed away on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at her home surrounded by her loving family.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, at 1 p.m. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Watertown with Father Jorge Miramontes officiating.
Relatives and friends may gather at the church on Thursday, from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorials, if desired, would be appreciated to the family.
Francisca Christoffel was born on March 10, 1934, in Semarang, island of Java, Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia, to George Adriaan Christoffel and Geertruida Johanna (Diepenhorst) Christoffel.
Fran, her mother and siblings were, after the end of WWII, incarcerated in a concentration camp because they were a colonial family of mixed blood (referred to as Indo.s) by the Indonesian Freedom Fighters, who were contesting the right of the Dutch to reclaim their colony.
Their release was then negotiated by her father after he returned to his home land as a surviving POW of the Burma railroad.
Fran moved to the Netherlands in 1956. On May 18, 1961, she married Johannes Verhoeven in Almelo, in the province of Overijsel, in the Netherlands. Fran and John immigrated to the United States on June 13, 1962.
Fran worked as an accounting clerk in Indonesia, the Netherlands, and in the U.S. She was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Watertown, and worked as a teacher's aide for a while at St. Bernard’s School. After she became a mother, she was a homemaker most of all.
She is survived by her husband Johannes "John" Verhoeven of Watertown; a son, Rudolph "Rudy" (LouAnn) Verhoeven of Milwaukee; a daughter, Joanne (Danny) Rice of Madison; three grandchildren, Kyle (Tonya) DeBlare, Sierra DeBlare, Steven Verhoeven; one great-grandson, Braxton DeBlare; two sisters, Lies (Albert) Van Dewoude, , Janette Davides; one brother, George (Jannie) Christoffel, along with other relatives and friends.
Fran was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Wim Davides.
