Robert J. Voss, 86, of Watertown, died on Monday, July 23, 2012, at Rainbow Hospice Inpatient Center in Johnson Creek.
He was born June 10, 1926, in Wauwatosa, the son of Pastor Mrs. Luther M. Voss. He was received into God's covenant of grace in holy baptism on June 21. After Christian training in the home and Good Shepherd's Lutheran Church, the baptismal covenant was confirmed on May 28, 1939, when his father chose for him the memory verse which became a motto for his life, I Cor. 16:13, "Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love."
Robert married Carol Holz on June 24, 1951, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Milwaukee.
Pastor Voss trained for the Christian ministry at Northwestern College and Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, culminating in 1950 with the first call assignment to Northwestern as tutor.
Pastor Voss served in the parish ministry at Faith Lutheran in Fond du Lac and Siloah Lutheran in Milwaukee, and later in his ministry as the pulpit assistant at Salem Lutheran in Milwaukee.
Pastor Voss was dedicated to education serving as president of the first Wisconsin Lutheran College, executive secretary of the Board for Ministerial Training, and president of Northwester College.
After his retirement in 1993, Pastor Voss spent a year in Russia, teaching English and establishing the Lutheran Church of WELS there. He also servied in Europe assisting the civilian chaplaincy program, WELS radio ministry, and WELS Kingdom Workers.
Robert will be missed by his loving wife of 61 years, Carol, and children Richard (Susan) of Glendale, AZ; David (Lorry) of Appleton; Mark (Marie) of Aurora, CO; Carla (Greg) Dallmann of Winchester, VA; and Carolyn (Ross) Henzi of Brillion. Sadly missed by grandchildren, Andrew, Sarah, and Mary Voss; Kelly Voss and Kasey (Shaun) Riesop; Thomas (Kendalyn), Douglas (Amy), Emily and Heather Voss, Robert (Leina), Joshua and Jordan Dallmann; Erin, Carol, Kristin, Katie, and Emma Henzi and five great-grandchildren, Cory, Lauren, and Callen Riesop; Josefine Voss; and Jedrick Joyce; and other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and their husbands and beloved grandchild Lisa Joy Dallmann.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 26, 2012, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Watertown. Family and friends may pay their respects from 11AM until the time of the service. A service of Christian burial will be held immediately following the visitation beginning at 1PM with Rev. John Boehringer and Rev. Rod Warnecke officiating. Memorials, if desired, would be appreciated to Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod, WELS Kingdom Workers, WELS Ministerial Training, Marquardt Foundation or to Rainbow Hospice Inpatient Center in Johnson Creek.
A private family burial will take place immediately following the funeral service at Graceland Cemetery in Milwaukee, awaiting our Lord's triumphant return.
The family wishes to thank the kind staff at Rainbow Hospice Care Inpatient Center for the tender care they gave to Robert.
