Gilbert D. Schmidt, 81, of Watertown, passed away on Sunday, July 22, 2018 at Park Ridge in Watertown.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, July 27, 2018 at 11:30 a.m. at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church in Watertown with Rev. Todd Iverson officiating. Burial will take place at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Cemetery in Watertown. Family and friends may gather at Hafemeister Funeral Home on Thursday from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Gilbert David Schmidt was born on April 25, 1937 in Watertown, the son of Herman Carl and Alice (nee Rieck) Schmidt. He was a 1955 graduate of Lake Mills High School. On June 19, 1965 he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Schutz at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waterloo. He was a hard-working dairy farmer and sold Dairyland Seed Corn. Gilbert was a lifelong member of Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church in Watertown where he served as an Usher. He enjoyed playing for the church’s Dartball team. Gilbert loved the outdoors, especially gardening, fishing and deer hunting. He enjoyed puzzles and spending time with his family.
Gilbert is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Ann Schmidt; children, Cynthia (Rob) Gruenwald of Watertown, Ronald Schmidt of Watertown, Todd (Krista) Schmidt of Johnson Creek and Kimberly (Matt) Galston of Lowell; grandchildren, Kristina Gruenwald, Tyler Gruenwald, Jason Gruenwald, Jordan Nelson, Lexy Schneider, Preston Schmidt, Hayden Schmidt, Victoria Galston and Isabella Galston; sister, Eileen (Frank) Paulin-French as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, David Schmidt in infancy; brother-in-law, Jerome Paulin and parents-in-law, Louis and Dora Schutz.
