Christa Möser Johnson
Our mom, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, Christa Möser Johnson passed away on July 30, 2017 with her two sons holding her hands.
Christa was born in Braunschweig, Germany to Richard and Irmgard Möser on April 14, 1936. She was the oldest of three daughters.
In later years, her sons sometimes affectionately referred to Christa as a stubborn German. But that stubborn perseverance helped her survive her teenage and young adult years in post-war Helmstedt, Germany with very little food and resources.
On her birthday, April 14, 1959, she married Terry Lester, an American soldier from Minnesota who was stationed near Helmstedt. Fluent in German, and trained by the U.S. Army in Russian, he was stationed near Christa’s town on the East German border. Shortly following the marriage they moved to Wisconsin where sons Rick and Kurt were born. For several years, Christa and Terry were the owners and proprietors of the Aztalan Inn near Lake Mills.
They divorced in 1974 and Christa remarried Milan Johnson of Watertown, Wisconsin. Christa’s small frame housed an out-sized personality. She was a favorite server at Donny’s Supper Club in Watertown, WI and built life-long friendships among the clientele, owners and staff.
Following retirement, Christa and Milan moved to Inverness, FL. The distance demanded that Christa’s out-sized personality keep up with family and friends and contact was frequent.
A phone call from Christa was a non-stop whirlwind of questions, observations, information, nostalgia and then a quick, staccato ‘Okay, love you. Bye’. The listener was stunned, bemused and a bit breathless from the barrage of affection, concern, intensity and the sheer velocity of the conversation. (And this not in her native language!) But ultimately, those few minutes of Christa’s colorful style kept smiles on faces the rest of the day.
Milan died May 26, 2015. Christa filled some of the void enjoying daily conversations with her son Rick. Given that Rick inherited Christa’s gene for effusive, rapid conversation, one can merely imagine the content and cadence of those chats!
In failing health, Christa asked Kurt and daughter-in-law Roni to help her move “home” from Florida this summer, back to Watertown, Wisconsin where German ethnic roots run deep. Her time home was short, but intensely cherished.
Christa is survived by her son Rick Lester, of Juneau, WI, son Kurt Lester and daughter-in-law Roni of Watertown, WI, grandson Logan Lester of Denver, CO, sister Monika of Detroit, MI, sister Lilo of Melbourne, FL, stepchildren Tim Johnson of Florida, Sheryl Johnson (Dave) of Cambridge, WI, Missy Johnson of Florida. Dear friends Sue Bartelt of Watertown, WI, Joan Chambers of Inverness, FL and Marilyn Williams of Inverness, FL. Also many nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Christa’s family would like to thank Rainbow Hospice of Johnson Creek, WI for their care and support. Remembrances can be made in Christa’s name to Rainbow Hospice of Johnson Creek, WI. There will be a Celebration of Life at a future date.
