Ramona A. Thurow
Service: August 1, 2015
Ramona A. Thurow
Ramona Thurow, age 86, of Sun Prairie, our mom, grandma and great-grandma, fell asleep in the arms of Jesus, on Tuesday, July 14, 2015. It is a great comfort to us, her family, to know that she is now free from pain and enjoying the reward of her faith in heaven.
Ramona Anna Alvina Olp was born in Collins, WI on August 2, 1928, daughter of Alfred and Verona (Schroeder) Olp. She was baptized into the Lutheran faith on August 12, 1928. Mona was an only child and enjoyed a wonderful childhood, growing up on her grandparent’s farm. She went to four high schools in four years, graduating from Valders High School in 1946. Wherever she went, she made many friends.
When Mona was in her early 20’s, her family moved to Oconomowoc to own and operate Al’s Tap. It was here she met a handsome young guy named Don Thurow, and they were married at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on May 19, 1951. Their marriage was blessed with four children – Pam, Tom, Patti, and Tim. In 1968, the Thurow family moved to Watertown to operate the Candle-Glo Motel and Restaurant. Mona’s cooking became well known in the area, and people would travel miles for her fish fries, baked chicken, and desserts.
Mona and Don sold the motel in 1978 and moved to Hartland to be closer to Don’s work. In 1995, they retired to New Port Richey, FL and enjoyed eleven wonderful years there until Don’s death on October 23, 2006. Mona returned to Wisconsin in 2011 and enjoyed four years in Sun Prairie, where she made many good friends.
Mona’s Christian faith was most important to her. She wasn’t afraid to share that faith with anyone who would listen. She had been a member of St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Watertown, where she sang many solos for weddings and funerals. In Florida, she was a member of Peace Ev. Lutheran Church, Holiday, where she was an active volunteer and member of the choir. She was currently a member of Peace Ev. Lutheran Church in Sun Prairie.
Survivors include her four children, Pam (William) Schultz of Lodi, WI, Tom (Tammy) Thurow of Bella Vista, AR, Patti Thurow of Holiday, FL and Tim (Polly) Thurow of Hudson, FL; Six grandchildren, Josh (Jill) Schultz of Maple Grove, MN, Nate (Leah) Schultz of Rosemount, MN, Joshua (Elizabeth) Thurow of Fort Smith, AR, Sydney Thurow of Bella Vista, AR and Dakota (JD) Grilli of Havelock, NC; Justin Thurow of Hudson, FL; four great-grandsons, Luke Hadler, Jake Schultz, Reese Schultz and Mason Schultz.
Mona was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Don and an infant daughter, Bonnie.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2015 at 11:30 AM at Peace Ev. Lutheran Church in Sun Prairie with Pastor Luke Werre officiating. Visitation will take place on Saturday, August 1st from 10:00 AM until the time of service. Mona’s cremated remains will be interred at Florida National Cemetery at Bushnell at a later date. The Hafemeister Funeral Home of Watertown is serving the family. Online condolences may be made at www.hafemeisterfh.com.
Memorials may be given to Peace Ev. Lutheran Church or Heartland Hospice.
The family would like to thank Meriter Hospital 11th Floor Cardiac Unit, Heartland Hospice, and The Willows Nursing Home in Sun Prairie for their wonderful, compassionate care.
