Roy Zastrow was called to his eternal home on August 6, at Rainbow Hospice – Inpatient Center, surrounded by his family. He was 90 years of age.
Roy was born on Feb. 7, 1926 in Watertown, Wisconsin, to Richard and Viola (nee Beck) Zastrow. He became a child of God through Baptism, on February 28, 1926. He married Betty Mae Strobel on October 15, 1950 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Watertown. Betty passed away February 22, 2014.Roy and Betty had resided at Heritage Homes since 1997.
Roy farmed in the town of Emmet with his cousin, Vernon, for many years. In 1959, he began working as a truck driver for Allard Express until it went out of business. He worked for other trucking companies until illness forced his early retirement.
Roy was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. He served on the church council along with various boards and building committees.
Through the vision & insight of Roy and Edgar Riech, the construction of Heritage Homes became a reality. Roy and Edgar found other individuals with the same zeal. All of them planned and facilitated construction of the development. Heritage Homes, a Christian Senior housing complex on the west side of Watertown, opened in the mid 90’s and is now associated with the Lutheran Home Association.
Roy was also a talented woodworker and handyman, constructing 2 houses in his lifetime. For over ten years, Roy and Betty traveled across the country in their R.V., helping build 20 churches, while working with the Builders for Christ, a branch of the WELS Kingdom Workers.
He was also a lifetime member of the Turner Association.
Roy is survived by his siblings, Richard, Etta Mae, Frederick (Rose), David (Betty) and Thomas.
He is also survived by his 5 children, 14 grandchildren, and 21 great-grandchildren. Marilyn Bond and her son, Nicholas. Gail (Rick) Smith and their children, Jessica (Nathan) Belz and Evan (Becca) - Jessica’s children, Grace, Jeremy & Lana - Evan’s children, Cora, Rylan & Micah. Brian (Elizabeth) Zastrow and their children, Justin (Emily), Megan (Joshua) Seeger, Allison King, Kathleen (Matthew) Schilter and Zachary (Gabrielle) - Justin’s children, Benjamin & Henry - Megan’s children, Julia & Jonah - Allison’s children, Emma, Isabel & Owen. Noreen Wilson and her children, Jonathan and David. Paul (Shelly) Zastrow and their children, Jessie Haug, Barry Haug, Becky Linde (Jefferson Hatcher), and Carmen (Joe) Ramos - Jessie’s children, Keith & Christian - Becky’s children, Vanessa, Collin & Kennedy - Carmen’s children, Devin, Owen & Mason, along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Roy was preceded in death by his wife Betty, his parents, his brother, Orville & his sister, Karen.
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, August 12, 11:00 am at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Watertown with the Rev. Karl Walther officiating. Burial will be at Glenview Memorial Gardens in Ixonia. Relatives and friends may call at the Hafemeister Funeral Home in Watertown on Thursday from 4-7 pm and at the church on Friday, from 10:00 am until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Roy’s honor may be given to WELS Kingdom Workers, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Lakeside Lutheran High School, Rainbow Hospice, or the Lutheran Home Association.
