Doreen J. Nelson, age 70, of Watertown, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, Aug. 11, 2012, at the Watertown Regional Medical Center in Watertown.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 4 p.m. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Watertown with the Rev. Anthony Schultz and the Rev. Mark Gartner officiating. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Thursday from 3 p.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials would be appreciated to St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. The Hafemeister Funeral Home of Watertown is in charge of arrangements.

The former Doreen Joy Gerbitz was born on March 9, 1946, in Watertown, the daughter of Herbert and Genevieve (Fredrick) Gerbitz. She was a 1960 graduate of the Watertown High School and a graduate of Concordia University in Chicago with a degree in Education. On July 12, 1965, she married Richard William Nelson at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Watertown. Doreen taught elementary school at St. John’s Lutheran School in Watertown and St. Stephen’s Lutheran School in Concord. Doreen owned and operated Nelson’s Income Tax Service in Watertown and she and her husband owned and operated Nelson’s Sweet Corn for 31 years. Doreen was a member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Watertown and the National Tax Preparers Association. She was also an active member of the Watertown 4-H. Doreen enjoyed baking and collecting carnival glass and Depression glass.
Doreen is survived by her husband, Richard of Watertown; two children, Ricki (Jacqueline) Nelson of Stanford, Conn., and Dana Leija of Watertown; two grandchildren, Jordan Leija and Michael Nelson, five sisters; Shirley (William) Saniter of Watertown, Janice Edwards of Beaver Dam, Susan (Robert) Finnel of Watertown, Faye Petig of Watertown, Dawn Gerbitz of San Diego, Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Joyce Gerbitz of Fall River, nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
Doreen was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Earl Gerbitz and a brother-in-law, Donald Petig.
