Robert E. Schmidt, “Buddy”, 89, of Watertown, passed away on Monday, August 13, 2018 at Marquardt Health Center in Watertown.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Watertown with Rev. Karl Walther officiating. Relatives and friends may gather at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial with military honors performed by VFW Post #3709 will be at Glenview Memorial Gardens in Ixonia. Memorials would be appreciated to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church or to St. Mark’s Lutheran School. Hafemeister Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Watertown is serving the family. Robert Erwin Schmidt was born on November 11, 1928 the son of Otto and Bertha (nee Buedler) Schmidt in the Town of Shields. Buddy served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1952. He was stationed in Kaiserslautern, Germany working as an interpreter for the 470th Engineers. On February 2, 1953 he married Carol Kohlhoff in Watertown.
Robert worked for the Otto Biefeld Company in Watertown as a machinist for 17 years and later for GB Lewis later known as Menasha in Watertown for 23 years. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Watertown and took great pride in knowing he made the cross on the steeple of his church. He enjoyed fishing, traveling, and woodworking.
He is survived by his wife Carol of Watertown; children, Dawn (Earl) Sauer and Timothy F. (Kim) Schmidt both of Watertown; grandchildren, Nathan (Liz) Sauer, Danielle Schmidt, and Beth (Jeff) Bartell; one great-granddaughter Ellie Sauer; sister-in-law Jean Zurheide of Watertown; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was the last member of his immediate family.
Buddy was preceded in death by his parents, siblings: Marvin (Viola) Schmidt, Delly (Margaret) Schmidt, Polly (Margaret) Schmidt, Ollie (Frances) Haberkorn, and two sisters in infancy; brother-in-law Eugene “Bud” Zurheide; nephew Daryl Schmidt.
