Carol Irene Hynek was born on July 31, 1937 to Frank and Amanda (nee Degner) Hynek in Oconomowoc. Carol graduated from Oconomowoc High School in 1955. St. Matthew’s made a big impact on Carol’s life throughout the years. She was baptized on September 5, 1937, and confirmed on March 18, 1951. She met her future husband Melvin at a St. Matthew’s Youth Rally where she played the accordion. On March 24, 1956, Carol married Melvin Niere at St. Matthew’s Ev. Church in Oconomowoc. She worked at Dr. James’ and Dr. Namacher’s office. Ironically, she was the first baby Dr. James’ delivered in Oconomowoc. She was later employed at Kettle Moraine Hospital in the outpatient insurance department. Carol enjoyed volunteering at St. Matthew’s Church, where she had been a lifelong member; she played on the church’s dartball team and created many of the church’s bulletins. She also enjoyed participating in various card clubs, entertaining her family and friends, and was an excellent cake maker. Carol was very generous with her time, spreading kindness and wanting nothing in return. She loved entertaining for the holidays or for no specific reason.
She is survived by her children, Steven (Debbie) Niere, Gale (Patrick Repovsch) Zastrow; grandchildren, Amanda (Kyle) Ewert, Jessica (Michael) Senn, Nicholas Zastrow; step-grandchildren, Steve Johnson, Tonya (Randy) Westover, Melanie (Ryan) Fick, Jessica (Jarrod) Scheunemann, Rebecca (Andrew) Topham, Joshua (Mary) Repovsch, Cody (Alivia) Repovsch; 3 great-grandchildren; 15 step-great-grandchildren; sister, Marlene Raether; sister-in-law, Carole Hynek; step-brother, Wayne Lueck; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Niere on February 27, 2010; parents, Frank and Amanda Hynek; parents-in-law, Ernst and Ines Niere; grandson, Chad Zastrow; brothers, Charles Hynek and Franklin Hynek in infancy; brother-in-law, George Raether; step-sister, Irese Lueck; sister-in-law, Dorothy (Arthur) Schmidt.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at The View at Pine Ridge and AngelsGrace Hospice for their tenderness and compassion in looking after mom.
