Velma Esther Sophie (Posselt) Melcher, age 96, Sunset Ridge Assisted Living, Johnson Creek, formerly of Ixonia and Watertown , passed away on August 27th, 2015. Velma was born on December 18, 1918 in Waupaca County, Dale, WI. She was the daughter of Erna (Kernin) and Paul Posselt of Dale.
Velma was baptized January 19, 1919 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on July 3rd, 1932 at Evangelical Zion Lutheran Church, town of Caledonia, Dale, WI.
Velma went to public country school in Dale, near Appleton. Velma graduated from school of cosmetology in Milwaukee in 1936. She worked in a beauty shop in Appleton and Fremont, WI until she married Martin F. Melcher, of Ixonia, on Oct. 10th, 1942. They were married in Evangelical Zion Lutheran Church in Dale, WI. Martin preceded Velma in death April 18th, 1986. They owned and operated a farm on Golpher Hill Rd, Ixonia, which was the Melcher homestead, until September, 1976. Velma and Martin also lived in Pipersville for 10 years until Martin passed away. Velma moved to Watertown in 1987 and did home cleaning and worked in resale shops for 10 years. Velma moved to Mueller apartments, part of the Marquardt Village, in 2002. While living there, she was a member of the choir and enjoyed various activities. Velma was proficient in embroidery, making dish towels and other projects for family, friends and charity.
Velma was a member of St. Paulís Lutheran Church of Ixonia and sang in the church choir, and was a member of Ladies Aid. She was also a member of The Wethonkitha Club and WELS OWLS and Lakeside Lutheran High School Ladies Guild. She and Martin were Jefferson County 4-H leaders for many years. They were also members of Watertown Dance Club and loved to dance. She was an Avon representative for 40 years. Velma also went to Montana on Amtrak 3 times well into her 80ís to visit her daughter, LuAnn. For 13 years, Velma and Karen, her daughter, enjoyed lunch at Perkins in Watertown, every single Saturday.
Velma and Martin adopted two daughters as infants and they are Karen (Larry) Hafenstein of Lake Mills, and LuAnn Melcher-Edwards of Montana. Grand-children, Jason (Rebecca) Hafenstein of Richland Center, Jackie Hafenstein of Lake Mills, and Kaycee (Nate) Welke of Fort Atkinson. LuAnnís children, Brent Salgado, South Dakota, Angela (Ted) Johnson, New Mexico, Amy Edwards, Wynden Edwards of Montana. There are 8 great-grandchildren and one on the way. Velmaís sisters, Gertrude Knoke, Marilyn Semrau, and brother, Ron (Phyllis) Posselt all of Appleton. She was preceded in death by a sister, Elsie Grunewald. There are many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends that survive her.
Velma had a long life and was mentally sharp until her death, such a blessing. She was loving and kind to all she met who loved her instantly. There is also something special about those who call other peopleís children, their own. Between Velma and her siblings, Marilyn and Ron, they adopted 5 children altogether and one of those children adopted 4 boys. Velma and her siblings made sure all of their children knew Jesus and what he has done for them. Velma will be dearly missed by her family and friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, September 3, 2015 at 11:00 am at St. Paulís Lutheran Church in Ixonia with Rev. Kenneth Ewerdt officiating. Visitation will take place on Wednesday evening from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at Hafemeister Funeral Home in Watertown and on Thursday morning at St. Paulís Lutheran Church from 10:00 am until the time of the service. Burial will take place at St. Paulís Lutheran Cemetery in Ixonia. The Hafemeister Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Watertown are serving the family. The family wants to thank Sunset Ridge Assisted Living, Johnson Creek for their exceptional care of Velma, above and beyond always, and Marquardt Hospice for their exceptional care as well; Watertown Memorial Hospital and their fine staff for Velmaís care, very loving toward her.
