Catherine (Cathie) Manthey was born on January 10, 1934 in Watertown, the daughter of Walter and Erna (nee Krueger) Manthey. She attended St. Mark’s Lutheran School and was a 1951 graduate of Watertown High School. On March 24, 1956, she married Don King at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Watertown. He preceded her in death on July 6, 2010. Cathie had been employed at the Watertown Daily Times from 1951 to 1956 where she described it as a fascinating place to work. For the fifteen years that followed, she was a busy homemaker and mother to five daughters. From 1971 until retirement in 1994, she worked as a secretary for the Watertown Park Recreation and Forestry Department. Through the years, Cathie saw the building of the indoor pool, Senior Center, Aquatic Center, the early development of Brandt Quirk Park and the growth of many recreational programs and sports.
Cathie was a lifelong member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church where she sang in the mixed choir from 1947 until 2016. Cathie sang for many weddings and funerals and also sang with the ladies’ choir. She had a love for music of all kinds and enjoyed playing the piano. After retiring, she did volunteer work for the church and played piano for chapel services at Marquardt. She enjoyed writing poetry in a style of her own and she loved to read. Cathie loved spending time with her family.
Survivors include her five daughters, Teresa (Greg) Welker of McFarland; Julie (Randy) Busler of Watertown; Patricia King of Randolph; Nancy (Gene) Kurtz and Charlotte (Mark Gosdeck) King, all of Watertown; eight grandchildren, Bryan, Sara (Evan), Don, Gary (Brianna), Kellie, Joshua, Amanda (Eric) and Jacob; twelve great-grandchildren, Tré, Angelina, Donovan, Brandee, Mya, Mason, Carmen, Alizandria, Aryssa, Julian, Jeremiah and James; sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and George Hackbarth as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. The family wishes to express their gratitude to Marquardt Hospice and Marquardt Manor for their loving care.
