Verona I. “Roni” Howard, 93, of Watertown, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2013 at Zinzendorf Hall in Watertown.
A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, October 3, 2013, at 11AM at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Watertown with Rev. John Boehringer officiating. Burial will be in the Hillside Cemetery in Whitewater. The Hafemeister Funeral Home of Watertown is serving the family. Online condolences may be made at www.hafemeisterfh.com

Relatives and friends may gather on Thursday at the church from 10AM until the time of the service. Memorials would be appreciated to Bethesda Lutheran Group Home, 1200 Jefferson St. Fort Atkinson, WI 53538, in her memory.
Verona Irene Steffenhagen was born on January 9, 1920, the daughter of Herbert and Lydia (Mielke) Steffenhagen in Arlington, WI on the family farm. She attended grade school in Arlington and later graduated from Poynette High School in 1938. On June 28, 1942 she married Merle E. Howard at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Arlington. He preceded her in death on January 21, 2004.
Verona was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Watertown. She and her husband farmed for many years while caring for her family. In her younger years she enjoyed singing with her sisters at various events. She was an avid card player. Verona traveled to numerous countries and places throughout the world. She was very proud to have started a school for the mentally handicapped in Batavia, IL. Verona volunteered at the Bethesda Thrift Store in Watertown for over 25 years.
Verona is survived by her children; Dick (Billie) Howard of Greensboro, NC, Tom (Debbie) Howard of Ellsworth, and Steve (Mary) Howard of Deerfield, one daughter Carol Howard of Fort Atkinson; six grandchildren, Melinda (Aaron) Morton, Lee (Kathryn) Howard, Katie Howard, Johanna (Scott) Sievewright, Bryan (Kristin) Howard, Eric Howard; six great-grandchildren, Andrew Morton, Emilie Morton, Shane Howard, Ramsay Sievewright, Rourke Sievewright, Mae Verona Howard; two sisters, Donna Taylor of Madison, Shirley Jacobus of Lodi, many loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was further preceded in death by her parents; a son Robert Howard; sisters Ruth Caldwell, Isabelle Lemar, Marlene Young; brothers Loris Steffenhagen, and Herbert Steffenhagen.
