Helen was born February 22, 1923 to John and Emma (nee Giese) Krueger in Wabeno, Wis. On May 18, 1946, she married her high school sweetheart, Lawrence “Bill” Morstad. Their honeymoon lasted for 64 years, during which time they raised a family, made lifelong friends and traveled endless miles together.
Helen lived in Fond du Lac most of her adult life. She was a woman of deep faith and commitment to serving others. As such, she was an active member of Immanuel Trinity Lutheran Church and worked for Grancare Nursing Home until her retirement in 1986.
After graduating from high school, Helen joined the US Marine Corps and served until the end of World War II. Her military experience defined many aspects of her life and, in some respects, she never truly left the Corps. Her uniform hung in the closet of every home she ever lived in, including Marquardt Village since 2011. “If they ever need me back,” she once remarked, “I’m ready.” Helen was named a charter member of the Women in Military Service Memorial in Washington, DC upon its opening in October of 1997.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Morstad, one sister, Hazel Dobbe, and a grandson, Nathan. She is survived by her sons, John (Deb) of Portage, Wis. and David (Mary) of Watertown, Wis., five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and friends too numerous to count.
Helen’s legacy is one of good humor, a love of music, and a passion for doing what is right in service to others. That legacy lives on in the many lives she touched. Memorials, if desired, may be directed to Immanuel Trinity Lutheran Church of Fond du Lac.
