Mary L. Justmann, 98, of Watertown, passed away on Wednesday, October 17, 2018.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at 11 o’clock a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Watertown with Fr. Miroslaw Szynal officiating. Family and friends may gather at the church from 9 o’clock a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place at St. Bernard’s Catholic Cemetery. If desired, memorials may be directed to St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. Hafemeister Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Watertown is serving the family. Mary Louise Setz was born on September 5, 1920, to Harry and Gertrude (nee Haberman) Setz in Waterloo, Wisconsin. She graduated from Waterloo High School in 1938. Mary attended Columbia County Normal School in Columbus, Wisconsin and was a member of the Class of 1940, the third class to complete and be graduated from the two year course of study at the school. After graduation, Mary became a teacher at Green Valley School in Ixonia, Wisconsin in a one-room schoolhouse. She later taught at McCormick School, another one-room schoolhouse in Waterloo, until it closed in 1942. She then taught at a one-room country school, Youker School, near Waterloo. Mary had many fond memories of the students she taught at those schools. She enjoyed dancing in her younger years, and met her future husband at a dance at Turner Hall in Watertown. On January 2, 1943, she married Dennison Justmann at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Waterloo, Wisconsin. Soon after, they began farming and raising their family. Mary was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Mary enjoyed taking care of her family, playing cards, especially Sheepshead, with family and friends, listening to polka music, visiting with friends, tending to her garden, spending time with her grandchildren, and celebrating many family occasions with her children and grandchildren. Her faith, family, and friends were very important to her. After retiring, Dennison and Mary lived in Green Valley, AZ for 15 years before returning back to Wisconsin.
She is survived by her children, Robert Justmann (Diane) of Iron Ridge, David (MaryLynn) Justmann of Juneau, Michael Justmann of Auburn, NY, Mary Ann (Tom) Gleisner of Wausau; daughter-in-law, Virginia Justmann of Watertown; 17 grandchildren, Terese (Terry) Mercer of Juneau, Chris (Becky) Justmann of Juneau, Leanne Neuman (Dave) of Columbus, Mark (Beth) Justmann of Juneau, James (Lisa) Justmann of Juneau, Thomas Justmann of Waunakee, Andrew (Jody) Justmann of Juneau, Deborah (Mike) Owen of West Bend, Rebecca Justmann of Twin Lakes, Shawn (Christi) Justmann of Watertown, Troy (Cherey) Justmann of Juneau, Scott (Corrine) Justmann of New Glarus, Todd (Anna) Justmann of Cottage Grove, Jennifer Sannes of Fond du Lac, Ryan (Kari) Justmann of Juneau, Todd (Allison) Gleisner of Fremont, Tracy (Mike) Pyle of Cottage Grove, MN; 38 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren. Sisters-in-law, Lorraine Justmann of Markesan, Ruth Justmann of Markesan; brother-in-law, John (Frances) Justmann of Fruita, CO; She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Mary is preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Dennison Justmann; son, Richard Justmann; her parents; brother, Frances (Barbara) Setz; sisters-in-law, Elaine (Harold) Klecker, Evelyn (Conrad) Metz; brothers-in-law, Clark Justmann, Jerome Justmann; two daughters-in-law, Margaret Justmann, Clara Justmann; a great-great grandchild, Declan Stedman, in infancy.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff and caregivers at Park Ridge (formerly Zinzendorf Hall) where Mary resided for the last five years and to Marquardt Hospice for their comfort and kind care given to Mom in her final days; A special heartfelt thank you to Grandma’s guardian angels, Debbie Owen and Christi Justmann, who watched over her with love.
