Eugene “Gene” E. Schlesner, age 92, passed away on Wednesday, November 16, 2016 at Golden Living Center in Watertown.
Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, November 20, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church in Watertown with Rev. Todd Iverson officiating. Burial with Military Rites by Beaudoin-Koehler-Draeger Post #3709 will take place at Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Cemetery in Watertown. Family and friends may gather at the church from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Beaudoin-Koehler-Draeger Post #3709 V.F.W.. Eugene Earl Schlesner was born on January 23, 1924 in the Town of Farmington, the son of G. Alfred and Grace (nee Lincks) Schlesner. He was a 1941 graduate of Johnson Creek High School. On November 14, 1945, he married Doris M. Huebner in Little Rock, Arkansas. Gene served in the United States Army as Special Agent with the 970 Counter Intelligence Corps Detachment in Europe from August 28, 1945 – August 2, 1946. He had been employed as a mechanic and driver for Motor Transport in Watertown for 32 years, retiring in 1979.
He joined the V.F.W. in 1959, was Past Commander of Beaudoin-Koehler-Draeger Post #3709 V.F.W. 1966-1967 being a member of the All State Team, Past Commander of the Watertown Veterans Council 1967-1968, Past Commander of the Jefferson County Council 1968-1969, Past Commander of the V.F.W. 2nd District 1972-1973 and also held numerous appointed jobs on the State level. Gene was a lifelong member of the V.F.W. Post #3709, AMVET Post #35 and Pup Test #24 Military Order of Cooties. He was a member of V.F.W. Post #3709 Firing Squad Past Commander Club V.F.W., Schlesner-Burri Post #305 America Legion in Johnson Creek, National Rifle Association, and Izaak Walton League. He was Past President of Plattduetscher Verein and a member of the Watertown Senior Center. He was also a member of the Evening Chapter AARP 3056, serving 6 years as director and 3 years on the nominating committee.
Gene was a member of Immanuel Ev. Lutheran Church where he served as an usher for many years. He volunteered at the Watertown Food Pantry, Meals on Wheels and for the Watertown Blood Bank. Gene enjoyed gardening, as well as hunting and fishing with his sons and grandchildren. He was an avid trap and skeet shooter.
He also enjoyed ham radio operating.
Gene is survived by his wife of 71 years, Doris Schlesner; son, Randy (Bonnie) Schlesner; daughter-in-law, Shirley Schlesner; grandchildren, Tonya (Scott) Krebs; Troy Schlesner; Tavis (Catherine) Schlesner; Kari (Gregory) Collyard; Steven Schlesner; great-grandchildren, Kody, Brianna, Siarah, and Tavin Schlesner; Ellison, Ava, and Isaac Collyard, Ryan and Ethan Krebs; great-great-grandson, Brody Baerwald as well as nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Ronald Schlesner and sister, Gloria (Don Sobrolske) Sobrolske-McInturff.
