Service: November 26, 2012
Verna M. Heine
Verna M. Heine, age 87, of Watertown, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012 evening at Rainbow Hospice Inpatient Center in Johnson Creek.
God reached down with His extended hand and said, “Verna, come with me to your promised land.”
Verna Winter was born June 16, 1925 in Reeseville to Elmer and Martha Winters. She had one brother Marvin Winter, and one sister Lorraine Kottwitz. She married Leon Hensler in September 1944. Together they had four daughters, Virginia, Sharon, Jean and Linda. He passed away in February 1957.
She remarried in August 1969 to Henry Gloede who passed away of cancer in April 1977. She remarried again to Alvin Heine in June of 1979 who passed away in February 1987.
After graduating from eighth grade at the age of 14, Verna started her working life as a maid at a boarding house. A few years later she worked at the Waterloo Shoe Factory. There she was eye-letting combat boots during World War II. She and Leon operated a cheese factory in Hustisford for a few years. She also worked at Bethesda Lutheran Home in Watertown, Fiberesin in Johnson Creek, and All City Food Service in Watertown/Hartland. She also worked in the kitchen at several supper clubs in the area – Chauncey’s Supper Club{now Donny’s Girl}, Washington Inn{now Golden Dragon} and Elias Inn.
Her relaxing time was spent “putzing” in her work shop. She would make crafts and woodworking which she would give as gifts, donate to organizations or sell at rummage sales. She took pride and joy on how she could build something out of nothing. She was kept busy with her volunteer work at Bethesda Thrift Store, Meals on Wheels and Sunshine Committee. She was active in KARA, AARP, VFW and St. John’s Ladies Aid and attended a weekly Bible Study. Oh Yea, Verna was also busy raising four darling daughters, despite the hard times as a single mother.
Verna was blessed being able to travel to different parts of the world during her 87 years. She admired the hot springs in Colorado, listened to the music in Branson and Nashville, mesmerized by Niagara Falls and Washington D.C., overwhelmed with Pearl Harbor, enjoyed the Bahamas, Florida, Mt. Rushmore, and visited extended family in Arizona, Texas and Wyoming. Her most memorable trip was to Israel with a group from St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Virginia (Terry) Schliewe of Watertown; Sharon (Jack) Schlotthauer of Eland; Jean (Bob) Latour of Bloomer and Linda (Jerry) Hepp of Watertown; her grandchildren, Matthew (Sue) Schliewe, Kelly (Rick) Miller, Tonya (Tracy) Nimmer, Cori (Greg) Beskow, Ryan (Jen) Hepp, Casey Krueger and seven great grandchildren.
Verna was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Marvin Winter and a sister, Lorraine Kottwitz.
She was the last member of her immediate family.
