Laverne W. Wilkes, 94, of Watertown, passed away Sunday evening, November 23, 2014, at Heritage Homes in Watertown.
Funeral services will be held at St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watertown on Friday November 28, 2014 at 11 a.m. with the Rev. James Werner officiating. Burial with military graveside rites performed by the Watertown American Legion Post #189 will be at the Lutheran Cemetery in Watertown. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church or to the Stars and Stripes Honor Flight.

Laverne William Wilkes was born in Watertown on May 6, 1920, son of John B. and Emma (Reich) Wilkes. He attended St. Mark’s Lutheran Grade School and was a 1938 graduate of Watertown High School. Laverne served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, from March 11, 1942 to January 6, 1945. He completed 50 combat missions as a member of the 15th air Force in Italy. He served as an engineer and turret gunner on a B-24 Liberator bomber named “The Boise Belle.” There were ten men in such a crew.
On April 27, 1946, Laverne married Marilyn Ann Mathews at St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watertown.
He had been employed as a Tool and Die maker at LaBelle Industries in Oconomowoc for 38 years, retiring in March of 1987.
Laverne was a member of St. Mark’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watertown. He was also a member of the Watertown American Legion Post #189 and the Wethonkitha Club in Watertown. Laverne was an avid bowler.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Wilkes of Watertown; his children, Robert (Nancy) Wilkes of Hales Corners; Linda Stark of Watertown; Dan Wilkes of Bradenton, FL and Laura (Jon) McGarvey of Schofield, WI; his grandchildren, Jennifer (Jason) Lawrence, Adam (Jamie) Stark, Jonathan Stark, Harrison Wilkes, Alexis Wilkes, Caitlin, Megan and Maureen McGarvey; great-grandchildren, Madison and Jackson Lawrence; his sisters-in-law, Sue Arnold, Betty Wilkes and Mae Wilkes, as well as other relatives and friends.
Laverne was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leroy, Howard, Roger and Ken Wilkes; his son-in-law, Gary Stark; a grandson, Robin Wilkes and his sisters-in-law, Gladys Wilkes and Mae Jane Wilkes.
