Shirley A. Retzlaff, age 59, of Hustisford, passed away surrounded by her loving family, on Wednesday, November 28, 2012 at UW Hospital in Madison at the age of 59 years, 5 months and 16 days.
Shirley Ann Pahl was born on June 12, 1953 in Watertown to Merlin and La Verna (Marks) Pahl. She was baptized in June of 1953 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Neosho by the late Pastor Edward Weiss and was confirmed on May 21, 1967 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Hustisford by the late Pastor E.B. Froehlich. Shirley was a member of the youth group and the church choir since the age of 19.
She attended Hustisford High School and graduated on June 4, 1971. Shirley attended Madison Area Technical College and became a Certified Nursing Assistant and Unit Clerk. On June 1, 1974, she married Warren Retzlaff at Bethany Lutheran Church, by the late Pastor Froehlich. She worked at Bethesda Lutheran Home in Watertown, the Hartford Memorial Hospital and the Senior Home in Hustisford. She ended her career in July of 2008 after working 20 years at Marquardt Memorial Manor in Watertown.
Shirley was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, the Hustisford American Legion Auxiliary Unit #420 and of their past president’s organization. She was also a very active member of Bethany Lutheran Church Choir.
Survivors include her loving husband, Warren; her precious daughter, Kristin Ann; her mother, La Verna Pahl; a brother, Ralph (Karri) Pahl; a nephew, Evan and niece, Emily, whom she loved dearly, all of Hustisford; five brothers-in-law, Ralph (Cheryl) Retzlaff of Fond du Lac; John (Dianne) Retzlaff, Allen Retzlaff, Jeff (Mary) Retzlaff, David (Cindy) Retzlaff, all of Slinger and a half sister-in-law, Angela Retzlaff, also of Slinger. Very special to her heart were her nieces and nephews and their families and uncles, cousins and many friends. Shirley will also be missed by her loving dog, Max.
She was preceded in death by her father, Merlin; her grandparents, Walter and Adeline Marks and her father-in-law and mother-in-law, Arnold and Mabel Retzlaff.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 11, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Hustisford with the Rev. David Pries and the Rev. Timothy Bauer officiating. Interment will be in the Hustisford City Cemetery. A meal will follow at Bethany Lutheran School.
Relatives and friends may call to pay their respects at Bethany Lutheran Church in Hustisford on Monday, December 10th from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Tuesday, December 11th, at church, from noon until the time of the service.
Memorials may be directed to the Bethany Carpet Fund or to the charity of one’s choice.
Shirley wishes to thank her husband, Warren and daughter, Kristin for their special acts of care giving and their love and patience, and everyone who sent cards, well wishes and prayers, also, the special staff members of Agnesian Health Dialysis Unit in Beaver Dam and all her doctors and nurses.
