Kate Schumann was born in Watertown on July 9, 1932, daughter and youngest child of Hobert and Margaret. She attended and graduated from Watertown High School in 1950, having participated in a number of extracurricular activities, including cheerleading. On June 21, 1952, she married Arnold K. Schumann in San Antonio, Texas. Prior to her marriage, she was employed at LaBelle Industries in Oconomowoc.
The Schumann had three children, all of whom survive. James (Mary) of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Margaret (Michael) of Bullhead City, Arizona, and David (Chris) of Janesville, Wisconsin. There are six grandchildren: Jason (Kristen) of Park Ridge, New Jersey, Michael (Elizabeth) of Los Angeles, California, Jamie (Jon) of Madison, Wisconsin, Daniel of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, Katie and Austin of Janesville, Wisconsin. Two great grandchildren, Alex and Chloe, also survive.
Kate was preceded in death by her husband Arnold, three sisters, Evelyn, Dorothy, Arline and a brother, Harvey. She lost her other best friend, Pepper, a mixed breed dog of considerable appetite and girth, after 14 years in the mid-70's. Pepper was never replaced but always remembered.
Kate was the consummate family nurturer. She supported her husband in all of their many endeavors, was supportive of children and grandchildren in their diverse pursuits, and was always ready with a helping hand whenever and wherever it was needed. She enjoyed bridge and would have played more had time permitted. She spent much of that time finding bargains in the best products and services at the lowest prices. She avoided notoriety and was happiest when she was helping others, primarily her husband of sixty-four years, her children and grandchildren. Because her grandchildren were born over a span of nearly thirty years, Kate gave special attention to each of them in turn, giving them the kind of attention few grandchildren get. Consequently, her grandchildren will miss her all the more.
Kate loved to get together with the family at holidays, making sure there was enough food for several large families. Because she nearly always stayed up late at night making sure everything was perfect, when she finally sat down after the meal was done, she nearly always fell asleep. This was more amazing because her spouse, children and grandchildren were a noisy lot, talking over each other to be heard, if necessary. She would wake when it was time to leave, but delay the departure to divvy up the leftovers, making sure all had enough to feed them several more meals. Growing up in the depression, Kate believed food was love, and gave her food love freely and often. All will miss her Christmas cookie marathons, concluded with the boxing and mailing of enough cookies to last 'till next Christmas.
Although Kate was forever kind and helpful, she had grit, strength and determination that carried her through difficult circumstances. During her and Arnie's last years, in spite of her own challenges due to memory, and Arnie's many physical disabilities, she cared for Arnie as no one else could, and he, in turn, cared for her as no one else could. Arnie and Kate are now together again for eternity.
