Adelbert C. "Bart" Matthias, age 91, of Watertown, passed away on Thursday morning, December 12, 2013 at his home.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watertown with the Rev. Todd Iverson officiating. Burial will be at Glenview Memorial Gardens in Ixonia. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Memorials, if desired, may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church or to the charity of one's choice. The Hafemeister Funeral Home & Cremation Service of Watertown is serving the family. Adelbert Carl Matthias was born on August 23, 1922 in Two Creeks, WI, the son of Henry and Elsa (Buss) Matthias. He was a 1940 graduate of Central High in Sheboygan, and attended two years at Northwestern College in Watertown. On January 4, 1945, he married Betty Jane Krueger at the First Baptist Church in Watertown. He was a veteran of WWII, serving with the United States Merchant Marines. Bart had been employed with his father and brother at Matthias Dairy in Cleveland. He also owned & operated businesses throughout his life. They included Sno White Dairy Store, Matthias Variety Store, and A&W Drive-Ins in Sheboygan and Waupun. He also owned and operated the B&B Restaurant in Watertown from 1985 until 1988.
Bart was a member of the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watertown, where he had been a volunteer maintaining the lawn, and delivered Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed spending time with his family and being a handyman for all their children.
Bart is survived by his wife, Betty, of Watertown; five children, Daniel (Linda) Matthias of San Luis Obispo, CA., Sally (James) Campion of West Bend, Peter (Jennifer) Matthias of Sheboygan, Betsy (Don) Veldboom of Waynesboro, GA., and Linda (George) Woldseth of Watertown; fourteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; a brother, Willard (Alice) Matthias of Cleveland and a sister Gloria (Donald) Hopf of Howards Grove; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Bart was preceded in death by his parents, his step-mother, Gertrude (Buchberger) Matthias, two sisters, two brothers and two great-grandchildren.
